Ginny, Mt Eden

Although Ginny lives in a small inner city apartment, it hasn't stopped her composting.

"I love to cook, and I always felt guilty putting my food scaps down the waste disposal," says Ginny. "Now that I have a hungry bin, I can still do my bit to reduce my rubbish, and help conserve our precious resources."

What does she do with the compost as she doesn't have a garden? "I never have any trouble giving it away," she says, "In fact sometimes I don't have enough soil to give to everyone that wants it."

Anna and Dave, Mt Eden

Anna and Dave live with their four children in Mt Eden, Auckland. "We don't have a big garden, just a small salad garden and some pot plants," says Anna. "Even so we used to buy a lot of fertiliser and compost, now we make our own. It's really satisfying."

"It's been great to have the hungry bin right by the back door; I don't have to go too far to put the scraps into it. It's so easy to get the dirt out too. I used to hate unloading our old worm farm."

"We don't have to do anything other than put our scraps in and take dirt out occasionally," says Dave. "It's amazing how much the worms get through, no smell too, which is great."

John, Waiwera

John Bell has composted all his life. This is the first time he has had a worm farm.

"I've always known worms were good for the soil, and seen them in my compost bins. This is the first time I've ever had a worm compost," says John. "The hungry bin is amazing, I never would have believed that it would eat as much as it does, but now we put all our scraps into it."

"I've noticed that the plants in our garden are looking much healthier since we started using the liquid fertiliser."

Rob, Annamirl and Siena, Kohimarama

Rob, Annamirl and Siena live in a townhouse with a small garden. "We don't have a lot of space, and certainly not for a traditional compost," says Rob.

"Our hungry bin is perfect. We never thought we'd be able keep a compost by the front door, but it never causes us any problems. We always wonder where the scraps go, as much as we put in, we never seem to fill it up."
